Highly successful and well regarded Darwin Airline has recently announced the opening of a new European base at Cambridge Airport in the United Kingdom. This new base will offer a total of 50 weekly flights. Namely, 24 to and from Amsterdam, 12 weekly flights to and from Paris, eight weekly flights to and from Milan and a total of six weekly services to and from the airline's main hub at Geneva. These flights will be operated in code-share partnership with SkyTeam member Alitalia.
Darwin Airline CEO Maurizio Merlo pointed out that the UK is a key market with Cambridge being one of the UK’s most thriving and affluent markets. It also plays host to many top tier companies in key business sectors and is considered one of the world’s most important centres for biotech research. With the news last week of a joint venture between EPFL, Geneva University and biotech champion Ernesto Bertarelli to open a “biotech campus” at the former Merck Serono site in Geneva, the new air transport link between Geneva and Cambridge is an important business link for Geneva.
