Small and medium sized companies are still not good enough at recycling as PET, paper, glass and organic waste is still found in company's waste, according to local newspaper Tribune de Genève (TDG). TDG reports that the Canton Geneva now wants to increase the amount of recyclables collected from 54% in 2011 to 70%. To ensure this happens, audits will be conducted and following these an engineering company will make recommendations to the companies on how to improve their recycling. This year alone 15 municipalities have announced that they will join the program while the city of Geneva is still thinking about joining.
Genevan SMEs gained new interest in their recycling efforts after a new law came into effect in January demanding companies pay to dispose of waste. The currently free waste collection service will be progressively phased out and companies will then have to choose whether they want to switch to a private waste collector or pay the municipality for the service.
