The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) has reported provisional results for April 2013 regarding the hotel sector. The sector registered 2.3 million overnight stays in April 2013 which equates to a 0.5% drop on the same period last year. Partly to blame for this decrease was the Easter weekend that fell in the last weekend of March this year.
The decrease, however, does include some good news in that they conclude after further investigation that foreign visitors generated 1.3 million overnight stays, a slight increase of 0.1% (+700 overnight stays). This slight, but welcome, rise is further evidence of Switzerland’s increasing appeal as a tourist destination among foreigners.
However, in contrast to the negative results of April, the FSO reports that the industry enjoyed a positive winter season. During the period from November 2012 to April 2013, the sector recorded 15.5 million overnight stays resulting in a 1.3% increase (+ 198 000 overnight stays) from the same period last year.
