The Match for Solidarity: UN and UEFA together for charity

Écrit par Federica Francesca Lobino

This year the United Nations and UEFA have an admirable idea. They decided to join forces - bringing together human rights and sport - for the benefit of children.

In light of this, the Stade de Genève will host "The Match for Solidarity" on Saturday 21 April 2018 at 16.00, with the participation of legendary players from the football world.

A Worthy Cause

This game is aimed at raising money for humanitarian and development projects led by the UEFA Foundation for Children. In particular, the funds will be focused towards helping children with disabilities. These projects will be carried out both locally and globally.

Additionally, the match is being organized to promote the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as set out by the United Nations, with a specific focus on Goal 10 to reduce inequalities.

Football's No. 1

And why football? Quoting the Foundation: “As the world’s most popular sport, football is more than just a sport, more than just a game. It has the power to overcome prejudice, promote peace and bring people from different backgrounds together”.

The charity match will bring together two teams coached by Carlo Ancelotti and Didier Deschamps. The captains are Luis Figo and Ronaldinho. The match will be refereed by the Italian legend, Pierluigi Collina.

Documenting Experience

Before the match, the Eleven Campaign, a non-profit organization supported by UEFA, will demonstrate the power of football to unite the world. Eleven are creating “a documentary spearheading a campaign that aims to use the power of football to break communication barriers, celebrate diversity and create social cohesion.” They will follow and film 11 kids from 11 different countries, brought to Geneva, to observe how they live and cooperate together for a week while learning about their respective cultures. The children will form a football team and play a 30-minute match at the Stade de Genève.

The events are held with the support of the City of Geneva and the Geneva Stadium Foundation.

Ticket prices are only CHF 10 (Tribune Nord/ Sud), CHF 17 (Virages) and CHF 22 (Tribune/est) and available from Ticketcorner.

Go and experience a unique day and contribute to a worthy and inspiring project!
